My name is Matthew McCullough. I am an independent filmmaker that recently graduated from The Moody College of Communication with a Degree in Radio-Television-Film. The seed that eventually grew into my passion for filmmaking was planted in 8th grade. I enrolled in a multimedia class, where I began learning the fundamentals of camera operation, lighting, and video editing. As I grew older, I continued to pursue classes related to filmmaking. As a freshman, I joined the national award-winning student-run weekly television show KCBY-TV. As I worked my way up as a new member, I continued improving my craft as an a filmmaker, eventually earning a spot in Special Features department of KCBY-TV. Our department was tasked with planning, writing, shooting, and editing weekly segments that were creative and entertaining. These videos ranged from comedy skits, to short films, to even a few music videos.
My experience as a writer, producer, video editor, photographer, and camera operator in high school helped me earn the award for best music video at the Rising Star Film Festival. Building on the success I had established high school, I enrolled at Baylor University as a Film and Digital Media student my freshman year in 2017.
After the 2017-2018 school year, I transferred to The University of Texas at Austin, where I enrolled in the Radio-Television-Film program in The Moody College of Communication in August of 2018. My production experience in college increased tremendously, as I became involved with advanced production classes, as well as a long-term job as a free-lance producer for the Austin-based YouTube sports channel, Fanatic Perspective. One of my most memorable experiences as an RTF student at the University of Texas is taking Scott Rice’s Script to Screen class, which is co-taught by Academy Award winning actor and fellow RTF and UT alumnus Matthew McConaughey.
As I continued to grow as a student, I also had opportunities to grow as a filmmaker. One of the most important and helpful experiences I have had at UT was enrolling in the UTLA summer 2020 program, landing a production internship with Dark Matter Entertainment, an LA-based independent production company. The responsibilities of being their production intern included sitting in on development meetings, communicating with investment partners, learning how to improve my script coverage skills, and formulating new and creative ideas for potential story development.
After graduating from the University of Texas in December of 2020, I interned with a production company in Dallas, where I got more hands on experience in commercial set work for companies including Coors Light and BWM. After completing my internship, I have begun the pre-production for my documentary, which I plan on shooting in 2021.
My hope is that this website gives you a clear picture about who I am, what kind of work I have done, and the skills that I provide as a filmmaker.
